FAQ- Why would I want to work with a Career Coach?
- How long will my job search take?
- How does coaching work?
- What does it cost?
- How do I know you are any good at this?
A: Good question. Why would you want
to spend your valuable time and money on this thing called coaching? In
short, because by working with me as your coach, you get better results
out of your career than you would on your own. If you know what you want
and you have recently conducted a successful job search, you may not
need a coach. If you aren't sure of what you want, if you feel like your
search has stalled out, or if you want to manage a mid-career shift,
then you may benefit from working with a coach.
According
to a study published in the Wall Street Journal, job-seekers working
with a coach find jobs 15 - 46% faster than those working on their own.
A: I
see a job search as having three
distinct phases: 1> identifying
your ideal target job; 2> crafting the communications (resume,
elevator pitch, etc) so you can articulate your talent; and 3>
managing a campaign to get the job. How long it takes to "get" the job
depends on where you are in the process coming in, and how much effort
you put into it. A rough estimate might be two to three months for the
first phase, one to two months for the second phase, and two to three
months for the third. So, from a complete standing start, where you have
absolutely no idea what you want to do, to accepting an offer for a new
job, would be five to eight months. Actual mileage may vary, of course,
and your attitude and efforts are the most important factor.
A: The process itself is pretty
straightforward. We schedule regular,
confidential conversations. I ask you questions to get you thinking, or
to get you
in touch with your emotions, values, beliefs. You see what’s working and
what’s not working and WHY that is so. I
listen closely, to WHAT you’re saying,
HOW
you are saying it, WHAT you’re NOT saying, what you are HINTING at or
DANCING AROUND. We
design action steps for you
to take between sessions that move you towards your goals, and we create
accountability for you. If you want to hear what it sounds like, here is a sample call you
can listen to.
A: You get
three 40 minute
phone calls per month, you can email me between calls, and daily check
in via Google Documents for $450 per month. I require a four month
commitment from new clients. Why? Because as your coach I am going to
push you and dare you out of your comfort zone, and sometimes clients
get cold feet after a month and a half and want to quit. Quitting before
you push through some serious obstacles means you don't get nearly as
much benefit as you would if you stick around. I want you to make it
through that, for your own success, and that is why I ask for a
commitment. If you are not willing to commit, I will refer you to
someone else.
A: Wow,
tough question. Good one, though. Well, I can tell you that I have
completed a rigorous training and certification program through
the Coaches Training Institute, one of the oldest and most
prestigious programs. I can tell you that I am a member of the
International Coaches Federation and that means I am committed to the
highest standards of performance
and ethics. Lastly, I can tell you that I have
worked with dozens of clients and that they have gotten amazing results
they would not have gotten on their own. Some of their testimonials
are on this site, and I can put you in touch with others like you if you
want references.
That's all well
& good, but ultimately coaching is a highly personal relationship,
and the only way to determine if you will get what you want out of
working with Big & Bold is to schedule a strategy session and
evaluate it for yourself. It's complimentary, so contact us today
and we'll schedule it so you can get started!
